| Feature | Support | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Inline CSS styles | ✓ | Works reliably. External stylesheets and <style> tags ignored by Word engine. |
| Embedded images (base64) | ✓ | Images embedded directly in HTML. No broken image links. Logos and headshots stay intact. |
| Table-based layout | ✓ | Only safe layout method. CSS Grid, Flexbox, and floats fail or break spacing. |
| CSS media queries | ✗ | Word engine ignores @media rules. Mobile rendering depends on fixed widths and fluid tables. |
| Web fonts | ✗ | Google Fonts, Typekit fail. Stick to system fonts: Arial, Verdana, Georgia, Times New Roman. |
| Background colors on cells | ✓ | bgcolor attribute and background-color in inline styles both work. |
| Padding and margins | ✓ | Use cellpadding on tables and inline padding in styles. Margins often ignored by Word. |
| Borders and dividers | ✓ | Border attribute on tables and inline border-style work. Avoid border-radius. |
Why Does Your HTML Signature Look Different in Outlook for Mac?
Outlook for Mac doesn't use a web browser to render your signature. Instead, it passes HTML through Microsoft Word's rendering engine—the same engine that powers Word documents, not web pages. This creates three major problems. First, Word strips out any CSS in <style> tags and most CSS properties. Your signature can only use inline styles written directly into HTML tags. Second, external images break constantly because Outlook for Mac can't fetch them reliably or your network blocks the request. Embedded base64 images solve this—the image data lives inside the HTML file itself. Third, Word reinterprets spacing, padding, and layout. Tables work. Divs don't. Margin doesn't work. Cellpadding does. You also can't use background images, CSS animations, or gradient fills. Font choices matter too. Web fonts fail silently. Outlook for Mac defaults to Arial or Times New Roman if it doesn't recognize the font family. The fix: build your signature as a table with inline styles, embed all images, test across Outlook 2016 and 2019 for Mac, and avoid anything that requires CSS or external resources. SignatureFox handles all this automatically—generating table-based HTML with zero external dependencies.
💡 Pro Tip
Use cellpadding on your tables instead of CSS padding. Word's rendering engine respects cellpadding but often ignores padding applied via inline styles. A one-pixel difference can break alignment in Outlook for Mac.
How to Install Your SignatureFox HTML Signature in Outlook for Mac
Once you download your HTML file from SignatureFox, installation takes under two minutes. Open Outlook for Mac and navigate to Preferences—not Settings. Under Email, select Signatures. Create a new signature or edit an existing one. Now open the HTML file in a text editor (not Word). Copy all the code. Paste it into the signature editor. Outlook for Mac's signature editor accepts raw HTML but renders it as you type. You'll see the table structure, colors, and images appear in the preview pane. Set this signature as your default for new messages. Close Preferences. Send a test email to yourself and check how it renders. The most critical step: verify it in actual sent messages, not just in the compose window. Outlook for Mac sometimes renders differently in the compose view versus the final sent message. If spacing looks off, you may need to adjust cellpadding values. SignatureFox includes an install guide with screenshots for every step, so you can reference exact menu locations if your Outlook version looks different.
