How Do I Add an HTML Signature to Gmail Mobile?

Gmail operates with two distinct signature systems that function differently depending on the sending context.

The desktop Gmail signature — configured at gmail.com under Settings → See All Settings → General → Signature — is a rich text editor that accepts formatted text, inline images, and clickable links. It supports a reasonable subset of HTML formatting: bold, italic, font color, font size, inline images embedded as base64 or as uploaded images via Gmail's interface, and clickable links. This is the signature that appears in emails composed and sent from a desktop browser.

The Gmail mobile signature — configured in the Gmail app under Settings → select account → Signature settings — is strictly plain text. There is no formatting, no images, no links. Whatever you type there appears verbatim in the email footer. It is a simple text fallback.

Here is the critical behavior: when you compose and send email from the Gmail mobile app, Gmail uses the desktop signature — the formatted one you configured at gmail.com — not the plain text mobile signature. The mobile signature only appears if you explicitly type it in the Signature settings field in the app. In practice, most users do not even realize they have two separate signature settings.

So the practical implication is: if you want your HTML signature to appear in emails sent from the Gmail mobile app, configure your signature at gmail.com on a desktop or laptop. Go to Settings → See All Settings → General → Signature → Create New. Give it a name, build or paste your formatted signature, and click Save Changes. When you open the Gmail app on your phone and compose a new email, your formatted desktop signature will appear automatically.

The limitation is that Gmail's desktop signature editor does not accept raw HTML input. You cannot paste a block of HTML code and have it render correctly. You interact with a visual editor, not a code editor. This means some HTML signature features — complex multi-column layouts, specific font treatments, custom spacing — may not be achievable through Gmail's signature editor alone.

For signatures with complex formatting, the recommended approach is to copy the rendered output from a signature generator and paste it into the Gmail signature editor. When you copy styled text from a rendered HTML page (like the preview from SignatureFox) and paste it into Gmail's editor, the formatting often carries over — font, size, color, links, and embedded images.

Step 1: Open gmail.com on a desktop or laptop browser. Go to the gear icon → See All Settings → General. Scroll to the Signature section.

Step 2: Click 'Create New', give your signature a name (e.g., 'Professional'), and open the signature editor.

Step 3: Use SignatureFox to generate your signature. On the final step, choose the copy-to-clipboard option. Open a new browser tab, navigate to a plain web page (even google.com), right-click in the page and choose 'Inspect'. In the console, paste your HTML to verify it renders correctly. Then copy the rendered visual from the preview.

Step 4: Return to your Gmail signature editor and paste the copied signature. Gmail will import the formatting, images, and links. Review the result in the editor — images should appear inline, links should be blue and underlined.

Step 5: Set the signature as your default for new emails and for replies. Click Save Changes.

Step 6: Open the Gmail app on your phone and compose a test email. Your formatted signature should appear automatically. If you see plain text instead, check that the correct account is selected in the app's settings — Gmail mobile uses the account-specific desktop signature.

Note: Gmail compresses images uploaded through the signature editor. If your logo appears blurry after pasting, upload the image directly through the editor's image insert button at a higher resolution, and let Gmail compress it.
